This woman reflects the distrust, fear and self-loathing I find in most poor whites in America - one of the hardest groups for me to photograph. I rich white playboy millionaire had lend me his old Buick, so I could drive around on the most remote dirt roads in the impoverished tobacco areas. Here I stopped and talked with this woman, but partly because I came in a car and thus in her eyes came across as more affluent than her, I didn’t manage to get to stay with her that night.
