This photo was taken the day after Aline, into whom Don injects heroin, killed a taxi driver. I had come hitchhiking to Jacksonville, FL the night before where I met the black girl Diane who promised to find me a place to stay. She and her friend Aline kept me waiting in a nightclub while they explored their options. Sometime later they came back all upset and said we were going to a motel. While we shared the bed there, I watched them pray all night long in between attempts to inject heroin: "Oh, please, God, let him not die." To get money for the motel, they had given a blow job to a white cab driver in a dark alley, but - it slowly dawned on me - had then hit the cab driver with a cobblestone to steal money also for a shot of heroin, too. The next morning, they slept it off and were mostly annoyed at being late for church, where they should have been singing in the church choir. The next evening, they again tried to find a place for me to stay and after much wandering around we ended up at their drug friend, Don. Shortly after I took this picture, we were all sleeping on his mattress where in the dark I could hear them having wild sex. I took some flash photos of their interracial sex, which the American photo developers refused to make prints of at the time. Hence this slightly nicer version of the whole prelude.
