Nina was my girlfriend in Union Springs at the same time as Mary, the cotton picker just outside town whose house was firebombed because of our relationship, but it took them 26 years before they found out they shared the “same Scandinavian boyfriend.” This is not unusual around there. One time I came back to see Nina her black boyfriend had just been murdered by an ax man who broke in. When I asked her why she was now living with the murderer, she said: “Well, it is so hard to find a man these days with them all in prison….you just have to take and keep what comes breaking into your house….” Nina was herself murdered 3 years ago, Mary told me.
